Why go
Guangzhou rewards the hungry traveller. The day should begin with dim sum (yum cha) at a busy teahouse — Guangzhou locals treat this as a morning ritual. The old city around Chen Clan Ancestral Hall and the Pearl River are the main sights.
Cantonese food extends far beyond dim sum: roast goose, claypot rice, and 'wonton noodle' shops with century-old reputations. Dinner is early by western standards — most serious restaurants fill up by 19:00.
- Morning dim sum — the reason most people visit
- Canton Tower and Pearl River night cruise
- Chen Clan Ancestral Hall's intricate roof carvings
- Shamian Island's colonial-era riverside promenade
Where to go
Spend a morning at Yuexiu Park and the Zhenhai Tower, then the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. Late afternoon, ride the Canton Tower before dark and take the Pearl River cruise after. Shamian Island is a calm walking district and free to enter.
Practical notes
Guangzhou summers are hot and humid — carry water and use the metro's air-conditioned stations to cool down. The city is also a rail hub: high-speed trains to Shenzhen (30 min) and Hong Kong (1h) make it a great base.
