Winter is the pleasant season — 20°C and green. Summer is hot, wet and occasionally typhoon-brushed.

Why go

Nanning brands itself the 'Green City' — Qingxiu Mountain's hills, a banyan-and-palm canopy and a river promenade make that mostly true. The functional appeal is location: high-speed trains reach Guilin in 2.5 hours, and the Friendship Pass (Pingxiang) border with Vietnam sits 2 hours south.

The food is the reason to linger a day: Guangxi's rice-noodle culture peaks here with laoyoufen — 'old friend noodles', a sour-spicy broth of pickled bamboo, black beans and chilli — alongside lemon duck and grilled river fish at the Zhongshan Road night market.

  • Qingxiu Mountain — subtropical park with orchid houses and pagodas
  • Yongjiang River night cruise
  • Base for Detian Falls and the Pingxiang border crossing
  • Old-friend noodles (laoyoufen) at dawn

Where to go

One day covers Qingxiu Mountain and the riverfront, with the night market as dinner. Add a second day for Detian Falls, Asia's widest transboundary waterfall, on the Vietnamese frontier.

What to eat

Laoyoufen at breakfast, lemon duck for lunch, and at night: grilled oysters, suan ye (pickled fruit) and coconut jelly from street carts.

Getting there

  • HSR from Guilin 2h30, Guangzhou 3h30
