Why go
The sight is the whole pitch: a broad bend of the Yellow River, with the Tengger Desert's dunes spilling down to the waterline. Shapotou has been running on this contrast for decades, packing sledding, desert skis and camel lines into the space between dune and river.
It is a theme-park desert rather than a wilderness one — which is exactly why it works for a family day out, and why the desert hotel at night, away from the rides, still delivers the quiet.

Practical tips
The zipline over the river is the signature ride — queue for it early or late. Sledding burns out after a few runs, so pace the day: dune activities in the morning, river bridge and boat in the afternoon. July sand surface is genuinely hot; shoes stay on.
Nearby
Zhongwei's old town has a walkable canal quarter. For desert purists, the Badain Jaran's mega-dunes are a day's drive north — same idea, far wilder.
