Beijing's spring and autumn are the golden seasons — clear skies, comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot and crowded. Winter is cold but the Great Wall under snow is unforgettable.

Why go

The highlights are genuinely world-class: the Simuwu ding — the heaviest ancient bronze ever recovered — and an exquisite jade burial suit of the Han dynasty, stitched from thousands of jade tiles with gold thread.

The scale is daunting, which is exactly the point: a civilisation this old, this continuous and this vast is impossible to grasp quickly. Two focused hours in the Ancient China hall will give you more context than a week of scattered sightseeing.

  • The 'Ancient China' hall runs from Peking Man to the Qing in one long walk
  • The jade burial suit and the Simuwu ding bronze are the superstars
  • Free entry, but timed tickets go fast — book a week ahead
  • It faces Tiananmen Square: combine the two in one day

How to see it

Start at the top and work down. The Ancient China hall occupies several floors and deserves two hours alone; the modern and contemporary galleries upstairs can be skimmed. Audio guides are worth the small fee — the collections have far less English labelling than the Shanghai Museum. Pace yourself: it is easy to burn out in the first hour and drift past the best objects.

Practical notes

Security is thorough and queues can be long; arrive 30 minutes before your timed slot. No large bags. The museum is a natural partner for Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City across the road, but doing all three in one day is a lot — pick two and give them real time.

Getting there

  • Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East; the museum is on the east side of Tiananmen Square
