Huangshan's scenery is almost abstract: stone columns rising through mist, pines bent by a century of wind, and no soil in sight. The 'Four Wonders' are the sea of clouds, the oddly shaped rocks, the hot springs, and the legendary pines.
Most visitors stay one night on the summit. The standard route is the Yungu cable car up, a walk to the hotels, sunrise at Brightness Top, and the descent by the Yuping cable car.

Practical tips
Check the mountain weather before booking your overnight. Fog can close the views for days. Pack light but warm — the summit is 10°C colder than the base. The cliff-edge paths (including the glass-bottomed sections) are safe but not for the faint of heart.

The ancient villages of Hongcun and Xidi are 45 minutes away and look straight out of an ink painting — combine them with the mountain for a perfect three days.
What to See — Aug 2026 Picks
Yellow Mountain is China's most famous granite peak range — UNESCO-listed, wrapped in year-round 'seas of clouds', and scattered with 1,000-year-old pines that inspired generations of painters. The sights are not spread across the mountain: almost everything first-time visitors want sits along the top ridge between the two summit hotels.
A typical Xiaohongshu plan is: arrive at Bright Summit for sunrise, wander the western ridge, ride the West Sea Canyon 'train', and finish at the Guest-Greeting Pine. Summer day temperatures on the summit are about 20°C while the valleys below bake at 35°C.
Bright Summit (Guangmingding)
At 1,860 metres this is the highest point on Huangshan and the classic sunrise and sea-of-clouds spot. On clear summer mornings, the clouds fill the valleys below while the peaks poke through like islands.
Check the sunrise time the night before and arrive at least 45 minutes early — in August, influencers start claiming positions from 4:30. Stay at the nearby Bright Summit Hotel to make it easy.
Guest-Greeting Pine (Yingkesong)
A roughly 1,300-year-old pine growing from a cliff ledge near the Jade Screen Pavilion, its long branch reaching out like a host welcoming visitors. It is Huangshan's living logo and China's most photographed tree.
It sits on the eastern ridge, so go in the morning before the crowds from the cable car stations arrive. Photos from the guard-railed viewpoint are fine, but the rarer angle is from the downhill path to the left.
West Sea Grand Canyon (Xihai Daxiagu)
The most dramatic scenery on the mountain: a deep canyon with cliff-hugging walkways, sheer granite walls and narrow 'one-line' bridges. Chinese guides call it the most dreamlike part of Huangshan.
Most visitors descend into it, then ride the famous 'cloud train' (a track cable car) back up — about 100 yuan one way, worth every yuan. The canyon closes in winter, and in summer the cable car lines peak around 10:00–14:00.
Shixin Peak (Shixin Feng)
The classic Chinese saying goes: 'Never trust Huangshan until you've seen Shixin' — meaning this is where the mountain proves itself. The ridge is dense with contorted pines growing straight out of rock faces, including the famous 'black tiger' and 'unicorn' pines.
The short detour from the main ridge path is easy and uncrowded compared with the canyon, and the views east toward Shixin's needle-like peak are superb.
Cloud-Dispelling Pavilion (Paiyun Ting)
A pavilion on the west ridge that is Huangshan's best-known sunset viewpoint. It overlooks the entrance to the West Sea Canyon, and on evenings with a low cloud layer the sun sets into a sea of gold.
In summer, sunsets are around 19:00. Arrive 30 minutes early, and be prepared for the crowds — this is where half the summit converges at dusk.
The New East Gate: East Sea Cable Car & Xuanyuan Cloud Trail
A brand-new way up the mountain opened on 11 June 2026: the East Gate with the 6,638-metre East Sea cable car, the longest on Huangshan, plus a new 1.4-km cliff-side walk called the Xuanyuan Cloud Trail. The mountain now has four open gates.
The East Gate is the least crowded access and drops you near the summit ridge's eastern sights, making it a smart alternative to the congested South Gate cable cars in August.
August is peak season: summit entry tickets are about 190 yuan and must be booked up to 7 days in advance through the official account in summer. 2026 university graduates get free entry before 31 August. The summit is gloriously cool (~20°C) but the cable cars queue for 1–2 hours by midday — take the first cable car at opening, or try the new East Gate (opened 11 June 2026) to skip the worst crowds. Bring a fleece: even in August, summit nights drop below 15°C.
