Why go
Emei's religious history runs deep — Buddhism arrived here in the first century and the mountain has been a pilgrimage destination ever since. Temples climb every ridge, connected by stone paths that can take days to walk in full.
The practical visit is the two-day classic: bus to Wannian Temple and Leidongping, cable car to the Golden Summit for sunrise, and the descent through the temple sites. The monkeys run the middle slopes and have no respect for bags.
- The Golden Summit — the 48-metre bronze statue and cloud-sea sunrise
- The cable cars through the mist to the summit
- Wannian Temple with its 1,000-year-old bronze Buddha
- The monkey population — charming from a distance, thieving up close
Practical tips
Guard your belongings around the monkeys — no food in open bags, no eye contact, no running. Summit weather changes in minutes; the observation decks are worth waiting out. Walking the full 60km pilgrim path is possible but takes 3–4 days.
Nearby
The Leshan Giant Buddha is 40 minutes away and pairs naturally with Emei — see the Buddha first, then the mountain. Chengdu is the base for both.
