Why go
The wall was not one project but centuries of them — Ming builders used stone and brick on the Beijing sections, giving Mutianyu its photogenic form. It was a border, a road and a symbol; walking it, you feel all three.
Mutianyu's route is a loop along a ridge: go right from the tower, walk to the far watchtowers, and return along the parallel stretch. The gradient is manageable for most fitness levels.

Practical tips
Go early — the first cable car up at 8:00 means an empty wall. Carry water and a snack; the vendors at the base overcharge. Wear shoes with grip; the steps are uneven and occasionally steep.
Other sections
Jiankou, west of Mutianyu, is the wild, unrestored wall for hikers — spectacular but genuinely dangerous without a guide. Badaling is the most famous and the most crowded; avoid on weekends.

The 2026 story at Mutianyu is the summer night-wall program — sunset cable-car rides, laser light shows and a Qijia Army live performance on the wall — which wraps up for the season on 31 August, so August is the last chance. By day, Xiaohongshu travelers are chasing the empty first-entry wall at 7:30 and the 'Hero Slope' climb to Watchtower 20, with the cable car-plus-toboggan combo the most-posted route of the summer.
Night Wall Experience (runs until 31 Aug 2026)
From 17:30 to 21:00 each evening, watchtowers 10–15 open for a sunset-to-dark session with unlimited cable-car rides, a laser light show around 19:30, interactive projections inside towers 12–14, and the live performance 'The Qijia Army Keeps the Land at Peace' at the cable-car upper station (dark on Tuesdays). The night ticket is 200 yuan and it is the coolest, emptiest way to see the wall in August — but it ends on 31 August, so for 2026 this is now or never.
A beer garden near the Wingsong Pavilion restaurant keeps running until 21:00.
Watchtower 14 — Panorama & Hero Stone
This is where the cable car drops you and where every Xiaohongshu gallery starts: a 360-degree view of the wall unrolling over the ridges, with the 'You are not a real man until you've climbed the Great Wall' tablet right beside the platform. Take the first 7:30 cable car up and you get the whole panorama to yourself before the tour buses arrive around 10am.
Watchtower 15 — 'If You Are the One 2' Filming Spot
The arched window where the movie's proposal scene was filmed is the classic frame for couple and silhouette shots, with the crenellations facing straight into the sunset. It is the most popular portrait spot on the open section, so photographers queue for the window in the last hour of daylight — or during the night session when the light show makes it glow. The graffiti wall at nearby Watchtower 14 marks the boundary of the official section.
Hero Slope to Watchtower 20
The steepest stretch of the accessible wall climbs from Watchtower 19 to 20, the 1,039-metre high point of the open section. The payoff is the wall falling away behind you into folded green valleys — the backlit 'hero on the wall' shot that dominates Xiaohongshu this summer. It is a real workout in August humidity, so attempt it in the cool first hours or late afternoon.
Zhengguan Platform at Watchtower 4
Three hollow watchtowers fused into a single 20-metre-high blockhouse sitting in the lowest saddle of the wall — a structure without parallel on the whole Great Wall. It is on the quieter eastern line: take the south gondola up to Watchtower 6 and walk east. Architecture fans and photographers rate it the most distinctive building on the Mutianyu section.
Toboggan Down from Watchtower 6
After the history, the 1,580-metre metal toboggan run down through the forest is the ride every returning traveler posts. Take the open gondola up to Watchtower 6, explore the flat eastern towers, then slide down at your own speed. It stops running in strong wind or rain, and riders under ten must ride with an adult.
Book the ticket, cable car and any night session online in advance (peak-season tickets sell out), and target the 7:30 first entry for empty walls — or the 17:30 night session before 31 August. Carry water: there is no supply between the base and Watchtower 14, and the on-wall price is steep. Wear non-slip shoes and a light layer for the breezy heights.
