Why go
In the 1930s Japanese scholars claimed that no Tang timber building survived in China — the great wooden halls could only be seen in Nara. Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin searched for years and in 1937 found this hall, confirming that Tang architecture still stood in the hills of Wutai.
The East Hall, built in 857 CE, is a seven-bay great hall with a hipped roof and massive bracket sets that visibly carry the roof load. Inside, the coffered ceiling rises over a forest of columns, and statues of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and attendants fill the rear wall — one of the most complete Tang ensembles anywhere.

What to see
Approach from the south side and climb the staircase — the view of the East Hall's vast hipped roof and overhanging eaves is the photograph most architects know. Step inside to read the bracket sets close-up and see the original painted wooden canopy over the statue group.
A caretaker will often point out the ink inscription on a ridge beam — it dates the hall precisely. Look also at the calligraphy on the lower column faces, ink traces of donor names from the Tang.
The smaller Manjusri Hall to the south is a Jin-dynasty (1137) building, important in its own right. In the courtyard stands a short stone stupa dated 857, matching the East Hall.
Practical notes
Foguang is not on the standard Mount Wutai pilgrimage route and receives few visitors — the silence is part of the experience. Pair with Nanchan Temple for a focused day-trip of Tang architecture; arrange a car in Taihuai.
