Why go
Zhouzhuang is beautiful, but it is also the busiest of the water towns — daytime crowds can be shoulder-to-shoulder on the main lanes. The trick is to sleep over or arrive at opening, then spend the middle of the day exploring the quieter back canals.
The town grew rich on silk and shipping during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the surviving merchant houses show it: lacquered furniture, carved windows and whole halls built over the water.

Where to go
Start at the Twin Bridges, then work through Shen House and Zhang Hall. Rent a gondola from the central pier for a 30-minute circuit — the view from water level is entirely different. Save the small temple and folk-culture museums for last.
Practical notes
Overnight stays in the old guesthouses are the best way to experience the town; after 18:00 the day-trippers vanish and the lanterns come on. Carry cash or mobile payment — some small boat operators do not take cards.
