Why go
Qingdao's old quarter was laid out by German planners in the 1890s, and its churches, villas and red roofs give the city a European feel that is unique in China. The coastline around Badaguan is the best walking territory — tree-lined, hilly, and studded with old mansions.
Beer is the local religion. The Tsingtao Brewery Museum walks you through a century of brewing, and the fresh (unpasteurised) beer sold on street corners is a different drink entirely from the export bottles.

Day one: Zhanqiao Pier, the Catholic Church, and the brewery museum. Day two: walk the coastal path from Badaguan to the May Fourth Square, then take the cableway over the bay for a sunset view.
What to eat
Qingdao seafood is about freshness over fireworks: grilled squid, razor clams, and the famous 'beer and skewers' combo at an open-air stall. Pair anything with a bottle of the local brew.
