Why go
Tianyi Pavilion is a walled garden of book towers built by a Ming official who collected rare editions for 400 years of family scholarship — quiet, dense with bonsai and stone, and a rare surviving example of private library architecture anywhere in Asia.
The Old Bund along the Yong River mixes 1840s consulate and merchant buildings with bars and restaurants, and Moon Lake Park keeps the classical garden register. Ningbo is also the practical launch pad for Putuo Island, the Buddhist pilgrimage mountain-island two hours east by bus and boat.

Where to go
Day one: Tianyi Pavilion, Moon Lake, Old Bund at dusk. Day two: Putuo Island (full day, ferries from nearby Zhujiajian), or the 7,000-year-old Hemudu neolithic site.
What to eat
Ningbo seafood and 'yong bang' cuisine: steamed yellow croaker, eel with rice wine, river shrimp, and tangyuan glutinous rice balls — Ningbo claims them all.
