Practical tips

Skip the queue for the sightseeing bus — the walk to the nursery is 20 minutes through beautiful bamboo. Wear comfortable shoes; the site is large. The panda-shaped ice cream at the exit is a tourist rite.

Beyond the base

For a deeper experience, volunteer programs let you prepare bamboo and clean enclosures (booked through official channels months ahead). Dujiangyan's base is wilder and less crowded, an hour's drive away.

What to See — Aug 2026 Picks

August at the Chengdu Panda Base is a morning-only game: the park opens at 7:30, pandas are feeding and playing until roughly 10:00, and the base moves them indoors once the afternoon passes about 26°C. Xiaohongshu's focus this summer is the internet star Huahua at Villa 6, the July-to-September cub season at the nurseries, and beating the queues that stretch to an hour by mid-morning — the base keeps more than 200 giant pandas, with over 100 usually out on display.

Villa 6 — Panda Huahua

The short, round, famously slow-moving internet star lives here with her brother Heye. Viewing is capped at about three minutes per group and the queue can hit an hour by 9am, so enter at the 7:30 opening and walk straight here. Huahua usually rests indoors on Mondays, so plan around her rest day if seeing her matters.

Sun Nursery (half-year-old cubs)

The ward where the roughly half-year-old cubs live — the playful, climbing, tumble-fighting age that produces the park's cutest action shots. July through September is cub season, so the dens are at their busiest in August. Keepers do a fresh-fruit feeding round around 10:00, which travelers call the best moment of the visit.

Moon Nursery (newborns)

The newborn ward — one-month-old pink-and-white cubs in incubators, the most universally adored stop in the park. Go right at opening for the shortest queue and the quietest glass, since the nursery is the first place morning crowds form after Huahua's villa.

Panda Tower Panorama

The 69.8-metre bamboo-shoot-shaped tower is the base's landmark and the only place to photograph the whole green park from above — a 360-degree view over the bamboo groves and villas. Access is free but should be booked with your entry slot, and note the tower is closed all day Tuesdays for maintenance.

Red Panda Enclosure

Not a mistake — the red pandas (actually raccoon-like cousins of the giant panda, not babies) are the hidden gem of the park, scrambling through the trees close to visitors. The enclosure is noticeably quieter than the giant panda villas and endlessly photogenic, making it a favourite low-stress stop on the way to or from the new area.

West Gate New Area & Star Nursery

The newer western half is where locals go to dodge the crowds: brand-new villas with more air-conditioned indoor halls, wider boardwalks through bamboo, and Star Nursery, a quieter cub ward where several young pandas play at once. Entering through the west gate skips the Huahua queue entirely and is the smarter play for anyone who is not chasing the star panda.

Buy the morning ticket and be at the gate for the 7:30 opening — pandas are active and feeding until about 10:00, then largely nap indoors once the afternoon heat builds. Carry water, an umbrella and repellent, buy the 30-yuan unlimited shuttle pass (the park is huge, with long slopes), and book entry several days ahead: tickets are strictly online and no walk-in sales exist.
