Spring and autumn are best for the mountains. Summers are hot with typhoon risk; autumn light on Yandang is exceptional.

Why go

The Nanxi River, an hour north, is the region's quiet masterpiece: bamboo rafts drift between cliff walls while stone-walled clan villages like Furong and Cangpo preserve Song and Yuan-era street plans, ancestral halls and water systems still in use.

Yandang Mountain to the south is the dramatic half: a UN-recognised geopark of rhyolite cliffs, the 190-m Great Dragon Waterfall, and a night-time show where peaks are floodlit from below. Wenzhou city keeps Jiangxin Island's twin pagodas (a historic navigation mark for sailors) as its emblem.

  • Nanxi River rafting past Song-dynasty clan villages
  • Yandang Mountain's cliff walks and night-lit peaks
  • Jiangxin Island's twin river pagodas
  • Ou-cuisine street food: fish balls, duck tongues, wheat-gluten wraps

Where to go

Day one: Nanxi River villages and rafting. Day two: Yandang Mountain, returning for a street-food crawl downtown.

What to eat

Wenzhou fish balls (bouncy, made from eel), spicy duck tongues, wheat-gluten wraps and 'lamp-cake' street pastries. The local rice wine warms winter meals.
