Apr–Oct

Subtropical Fujian is at its best in spring and autumn. Summer rafting is refreshing but the slots fill fast; the stream is closed or restricted during flood-level storms.

Why go

The Nine-Bend Stream has been the way to see Mount Wuyi for centuries — its cliffs carry Song-dynasty inscriptions, and the boat coffins wedged in the rock are over a thousand years old. The raft ride stitches the gorge's highlights into one drifting panorama.

Expect a calm, meditative float: the 'rapids' are shallow riffles between bends, the shade comes from the gorge walls, and the whole trip runs on a quiet hum of poles against water. It's the mellow anchor of an otherwise hilly, temple-filled visit.

  • The bamboo raft itself — a dozen or more poles lashed together, steered by two puntmen with long poles
  • Cliff temples and the mysterious boat coffins wedged in the rock high above
  • The 9 bends, each with its own name and lore — the 'Big and Small Rainbow' reflections are best in still mornings
  • Pair it with the Da Hong Pao tea trail or a summit climb at the scenic area's edge

Practical tips

Departures are strictly timed and the rafts wait for no one — arrive 20 minutes early with your ID. Feet get wet at the front seats; plastic sandals beat sneakers. There's no shade cover, so a hat and sunscreen are the difference between lovely and long. Tip the puntmen if they stop for the best photo angles.

Nearby

The raft's lower dock sits at the foot of the scenic area, a short walk from the Da Hong Pao tea garden and the entrance to the cliff path. Mount Wuyi's summit is 15 minutes away by shuttle — climb first, raft after, so your legs rest on the water.

Getting there

  • High-speed rail to Wuyishan North, then a shuttle to the scenic area (~30 min)
